The 2012 Olympic 50p coins will forever hold a special place in coin collectors’ hearts, and as such it was only natural that a 2016 50p coin was released. It is thought that a swimmer was chosen as the main design due to Great Britain’s success in the swimming category in the London 2012 Olympics.

The 2016 version by the Royal Mint to commemorate the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro was designed by Tim Sharp and shows a swimmer with the Olympic rings just above with the inscription ‘TEAM GB’ visible.
