The Christopher Ironside 50p was released to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Christopher Ironside. Ironside was a coin designer responsible for the designs of the first decimal coins issued during the decimalisation period. Decimalisation marked the conversion to a decimal currency system whereby the pound was split into 100 pence.

The particular design used for this coin was actually created by Ironside himself back in 1969 but was beaten by his own Britannia design which was adopted for the 50p coin at the time.

The Royal Mint decided to incorporate this Royal Arms design 44 years later to pay tribute to Ironside and his influence within the coin world.
