Inherited UK Coin Collection: What to Do First

Start slowly when you inherit a UK coin collection. Do not clean, split up or sell everything before you know what the collection contains. A simple inventory gives you time to separate ordinary circulation coins from items that may need specialist attention.

Make an inventory

  • Photograph groups and individual unusual pieces.
  • Record denominations, dates, monarchs and visible designs.
  • Keep boxes, labels, receipts and family notes with the relevant items.
  • Separate coins only when their identity and storage will remain clear.

Handle coins carefully

Hold coins by their edges and avoid polishing or chemical cleaning. Use suitable holders and keep the collection dry. Read the safe handling and storage guide before moving older or delicate items.

Research before selling

Use the UK coin research method to identify items and compare dated evidence. Mintage, condition and demand all matter, and an asking price is not proof of a sale. For ancient, precious-metal or unusual coins, obtain an independent opinion from a qualified numismatist or established auction specialist.
