The Royal Mint issued the 2008 Queen Elizabeth I £5 coin to mark the 450th anniversary of Elizabeth I’s accession in 1558. The coin is a commemorative issue, not an everyday circulating £5.
Design and specifications
The reverse design by Rod Kelly shows a crowned portrait of Elizabeth I within a mandorla, with Tudor roses. The edge inscription reads “I HAVE REIGNED WITH YOUR LOVES”. The Royal Mint lists Ian Rank-Broadley as the obverse designer.
The 22-carat gold Proof version weighs 39.94 grams and measures 35 millimetres in diameter. The Royal Mint’s 2008 sales information lists 1,500 as the issue limit for the gold product and separate limits for silver and base-metal versions. Identify the metal and finish before comparing figures.
How much is it worth?
There is no single value for every 2008 Queen Elizabeth I £5. Gold, silver and Brilliant Uncirculated versions belong in separate comparisons. Condition, authenticity, presentation and recent completed sales matter more than a seller’s use of words such as “rare” or “treasure”.
