Edge inscriptions are words, numbers or patterns around the rim of a coin. They can help identify a design, but an unusual edge does not automatically make a coin rare or valuable.
What to record
Photograph the entire edge, write down the lettering exactly and note whether it is upright, inverted, incomplete or damaged. Compare the result with the correct date and denomination. Different designs can have different edge treatments.
Lettering versus damage
Wear, dents and contact with other coins can make an inscription look incomplete. A strike or production issue may have a different appearance, but it needs comparison with reliable examples before drawing a conclusion. Do not polish or scrape the edge.
Use the edge as one clue
